Hello lovely readers,
My name is Lucy. I am a chef, pastry chef, mother and wife.
My love of food and cooking began from a a very young age when memories of baking my own cakes started from around the age of 6. Though I do remember, getting up early when I was around 3-4 years of age and getting into the cupboard space to make my own play dough along with plenty of pancake making and cookies to follow. When I was in high school, I started making bagels on the weekend to have for my school lunch and started experimenting with holding a few dinner parties.
Food has always been a big part of my life. A form of bringing people together. Growing up in a large family we always celebrated life over food. Whether it be a simple family gathering at the table for a lunch or evening meal, or a full feast with a table full of guests.
I started out in the food industry as a kitchen hand at the tender age of 16, working in a local wine bar in the wine region of Mudgee, NSW.
My love of food continued and I took up a trade cookery certificate in 1994 at East Sydney Tafe and completed my pastry certification in 2006 in Adelaide.
I have gone on to work in many amazing areas within the food industry. From working in high end restaurants around the globe, including a Michelin starred restaurant in Dublin to working in the food media and publishing industries which has included behind the scenes work for Masterchef, My Kitchen rules and cooking food for the Neil Perry section of the Sydney Morning Herald Good Weekend Magazine. I even tried my hand at cooking Peter Gilmour’s infamous Snow Egg, quite successfully whilst my work behind the scenes at Masterchef was in action to determine timing for the Masterchef challenge, whilst contestants, Adam Liaw and Callum Hann were at the nail biting clincher! Oooooh Masterchef, you are quite the phenomenon, those were the days.
Along with experience of working in several hatted restaurants in Sydney as well as Melbourne. I also worked as a home economist helping to produce Anneka Manning’s Mastering the art of Baking, cookbook.
Recent publications include being a weekly contributor to a recipe section in the Barossa Leader Newspaper as well as being a contributor to drought fundraiser, Farmer Cookbook. A book which included featured recipes from many celebratory chefs and raised money and awareness for drought and the 2019/2020 bush fire tragedies.
Experience also includes self employment as a food producer for 7 years, supplying cheese accompaniments to gourmet grocers around the country as well as high end restaurants and time spent working within the food distribution industry.
I have recently spent time at Fareshare and Secondbite Australia organisations in Melbourne, helping to produce over 110,000 meals per month for people in need and overseeing up to 23 volunteers at a time.
Now that I have hopefully convinced you of my cooking skills, I am currently working on my first cookbook and I hope that I can bring an easy to follow guide into your life.
Watch this space 🙂
